Painting With The Girls 164
June 12, 2016
Day 164 (202 days to go)
An installation-type exhibit is not such the recent innovative development in art as people might think. For example Marcel Duchamp exhibited a urinal as an installation, called Fountain, to achieve a conceptual response from his audience back in 1917.
The same can be said for Richard Wagner, who in 1859 coined the word Gesamtkunstwerk, when promoting his Opera. It literally means total work of art. In his case he was describing the experience of being an audience in an art space, with all forms of art on exhibit, such as music, painting, architecture, writing and performance.
