June 10 2016

Day 162 (204 days to go)

Mauricio Albrecht

Watercolor, 5X7 Matted

When one tries to explain what contemporary art is, there is no point in looking at your object and trying to define it as good or bad, ugly or beautiful. A lot of people leave an exhibit frustrated because that is exactly their focus when looking at an object.

Contemporary art visual artists would argue that today art exists to induce commentary and discussion by making the audience’s point of view integral to the exhibit. That means the audience plays a role constructing meaning for works of art. The artwork is supposed to cause discussion, raise questions or provoke a strong response by challenging belief systems or social values.
