Gericault (1791-1824) was a French painter fascinated by human suffering and morbidity. He is also well known for his incomparable horse portraits that demonstrated amazing movement.

Gericault’s painting Raft of Medusa is his best-known work. It represents the shipwreck that took place during his time and symbolizes a political controversy about the responsibility of government via the mismanagement of the ship.

Gericault studied heads severed by the guillotine and interviewed patients at madhouses while sketching.

He was only 32 when he died in a ridding accident.
