Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a Surrealist German painter. He repeatedly painted bird figures that he named Loplop. He considered Loplop a messenger from his unconscious, which presented him with ideas for his paintings.

Ernst was briefly imprisoned by the Germans, but escaped to the United States. He was married four times, including to Peggy Guggenheim and Dorothea Tanning.

In 1950, he moved permanently to Paris until his death at age 84.
